“Glad we bought it” 2010-04-28
By C. David Mitchell
We bought this TV via Amazon during Christmas. Now, after four months of ownership, I can say with full authority that we are glad we own it. I note with satisfaction that the price is currently more than we paid, indicating that the market has spoken in agreement with us.
I studied the market a long time before choosing the Samsung UN55B8500. I almost bought us a Panasonic Kuro plasma, based on expert opinions that the Kuro had the best picture. While that may be true, the image quality of the 8500 is close to the Kuro, and every other quality is far superior. The thin panel and clean design make this TV fit into our clean, modern living room with ease. I mounted it on a wall and hid the wires/cables inside the wall. It is beautiful! It is as flush with the wall as our original paintings which surround it. There are times when I leave an original photograph or set of photos running on a disk in our Oppo bluray player, letting this display become a work of art.
The diminishing contrast off center is much less than some reviews have made it seem. To us, it is a non-issue, and we watch this TV from all over the place, even far off center.
We have had no issues at all with anything.
The sound is good, and we use the TVs own speakers. I am an audiophile, and I have a very special, high-end sound system in the same room, but it is for music only, and it is not suited to TV hookup. I would be the first person to complain if the sound from the TV was not good enough for television viewing. Movie sound is okay too, but I really should connect something to fill it out. My point here is to let you know the sound is fine, not something to complain about.
The only thing I would have Samsung change is the glossiness of the frame. This design would look better with a flat or satin finish. The glossy viewing screen is not the problem. It is just the surrounding frame that accentuates every little wave in the finish when reflecting light off-axis. This is an obvious design flaw which a good design department should have stopped early in the process. I am surprised Samsung allows this the get out the door. It does not do justice to what is now inarguably one of the best consumer television sets made so far.
Five stars for a magnificent product, and by the way, buying it through Amazon was the best way to go.
“Go and Get One!” 2010-04-25
By Daniel C. Robertson
I purchased the 8500 from Amazon late last year. I really wanted to “cook” it before making any decision or review. Well, this set is truly the champ. I have no regrets although 3d capability would have been convenient. If you don’t have one, get one now before they are hard to find. None of the 2010 models seem to match this one.
“Best TV EVER!!!” 2010-04-07
By E. Owens (Los Angeles)
I am a firm believer in buying quality, so I held out for the Samsung UN55B8500 for my first flat screen. The picture is the best I have ever seen. Every detail is top notch. The speakers are rear facing but are loud and clear, but I have not wall mounted it yet.
No regrets. Buy one while you can still find it. The 2010 models are out and starting to flood out the 2009 models in the distribution chain.
“Best LCD in the market” 2010-03-26
By Aman Gheewalla (Houston, TX)
I’ve had the Samsung UN55B8500 since back in November and I did a LOT of research on LCD’s before purchasing it. A couple months down the line, this TV still amazes me even after the initial “wow factor” has gone away. The colors are vivid, and the blacks actually turn completely black in a dark room. It’s like the TV isn’t even there. No other LCD on the market has the blacks of this TV, and even Samsung’s new 2010 line will not. They have not announced any local dimming TV’s for this year yet, and unless you really want to be an early adopter of 3D, there is absolutely no reason to get the 2010 models (Unless you want the C9000 for it’s thinness). Picture quality wise, this set is not going to be beat this year, unless Samsung announces another locally dimmed TV.
Overall, this is just the best LCD ever created. Check the reviews on any site. You will find the same response.
“Awesome picture” 2010-03-26
By R. Wright
We recently moved and didn’t want to go with another projection system for our home theatre, so compared all available LCD, LED/LCD and Plasma TVs. We found the Samsung 8500 55″ to be the best picture available. In addition, the low profile and on-wall mounting system made this the best choice for us.
We’ve had the TV for about a month now, and the whole family loves it, and no-one misses the Runco projection system we used to have. Although smaller at 55″ (our Runco screen was 110″), the clarity, brightness (without having to darken the room), appearance, light weight, low power consumption, and thin profile make this our preference by far!

“Early Adopter, Biggest Fan” 2010-05-27
By D. S. Cherry Jr. (Richmond, VA)
I got this TV prior to X-Mas as a big surprise from my better half. She knew that I had been researching for months on a replacement for our 5 year old LCD. I had read all the reviews on edge lit LED LCD’s and compared them in person dozens of times. I’m not a plasma fan at all, so those sets were out. Its a dying technology as LCD continues to move forward like Apples does the latest gadgets. But I kept coming back to the backlit LED local dimming 8500. It had a higher price point for sure, but the picture was far superb.
Set up was easy. Screw in the base or wall mount, plug it in, look at the video and audio settings (you must use a surround system), test it against movies, Blu Ray and the best HD channels you have, and adjust to your liking. Its really easy to do. Color is off the charts. Blacks are truly black and blues are incredibly blue. In essence, colors are lifelike, not saturated or overblown and the detail will make you do a double take once your favorite HD show is streaming through. Widgets are OK. I didn’t buy the TV for them. They are slow, but do work (I have a fiber optic 30 Meg down, 5 Meg up connection).
Read CNET talk about the Pioneer Kuro and how this TV compares to the “best” TV of all time. Or read the reviews here and be sold. This is the best LCD TV ever made. End of story. The picture is breathtaking and easily adjustable. Don’t spend unnecessary money on calibration. Use your own eyes. Just be warned to adjust the judder and other settings so that the picture doesn’t look too real! Amazing, amazing pic.
I have watched the price of this set for over five months now (trust me, I had a 60 day price match guarantee). Its gone up and gone down. It is going up now because you can barely buy it anymore due to legal issues between Sharp and Samsung over technical battles. Some retailers hold this model in our great nation and if you can pull the trigger, do so. Samsung won’t be able to replicate a picture like this for quite some time and don’t buy into the 3D hype. It will take some time to produce high quality HD video and those sets still use the inadequate edge lit structures (some across the top and bottom). Samsung hit the sweet spot with this set and after five months of Blu Ray, HD, Sports, Discovery, kids movies, even standard definition (gasp), I am sold.
With any TV, I recommend buying warranty especially since this set is in legal mumbo jumbo. If you don’t and you get a lemon, you will be at the mercy of Samsung customer service. Which is to say the least, somewhere between Darth Vader and Simon Cowell.
Long live the 8500. A stunning set visually and the uber thin chassis is equally impressive.

“Great TV; great delivery (CEVA)” 2010-05-08
By P and R
We bought the UN46B8500 from Amazon, shipped from Amazon via CEVA. We used free shipping but it came quicker than we thought, about 1 week. We were concerned about removing the old 27″ heavy TV, and the whole installation process for the new TV. The guy who delivered it (CEVA), Owen, was fabulous. He disconnected and moved the old TV out of the way. He connected the stand (an arduous process because there was a bit of extra plastic which caused it not to fit to the TV correctly, and he spent 20 minutes carefully shaving it down a little at a time to fit). He placed the TV on our stand. I told him how we wanted it connected (how we wanted to route the sound to our receiver), and he made all the connections, including for our DVR, DVD, and CD player. Then he made sure that each worked properly. He showed me how to use the remote, and how to make basic settings, and how to switch sources. All in all, he was here for one hour, which to my thinking is well beyond the call of duty. As far as the TV itself, the picture is fantastic. We really can see a big difference between standard and HDTV, and the HDTV picture itself is sharp, it pops, with vibrant colors. We could not be more pleased with the TV and our experience with Amazon and CEVA.
“Best Picture Quality out there!” 2010-05-06
By Francis J. Saccone III (Rochester, NY (MCD))
I have owned this TV for about a month now and all I can say is I am glad I spent a little extra money on this TV. I did extensive research online and in person trying to find the best product out there and I am convinced that this was the right decision.
It is very easy to setup. It actually took more time to screw on the base/stand than it did to connect and configure the TV.
I saw this same model retailing for 00 and I thought that was ridiculous, but when I saw it on Amazon for 99 I had to jump at that offer. It was worth every penny. From HD cable to PS3 games and Blu-Rays, this TV provides amazing clarity and picture quality. I know most people won’t bother, but I found some calibration settings online and customized some of the picture settings to, what I feel, optimize it’s quality. A simple google search for “UN46b8500 calibration” will provide numerous options to get the most out of your TV.
I have very few negative things to say about this TV. First, like I am sure you have read, the remote control is pretty crappy. It looks nice and it lights up when you go to use it (and unfortunately whenever there is any slight movement in the room which causes the batteries to die quickly). It isn’t as responsive as I would like to, especially when using it with your PC with DLNA. This pretty much allows me to watch any video I have on my PC streaming, or look at all of my pictures or listen any music I have on my PC. That feature is great, but the remote makes it slow and frustrating. But still, it is a nice feature. This also came with a smaller remote that looks more like a computer mouse mixed with an iPOD. But I didn’t even bother with it. It still sits with all the manuals and paperwork that I got with the TV.
I hear about the sound quality being poor from the TV as well. The sound is adequate, but isn’t anything special. If you want quality sound, you will need to get a home theater system, just like every other TV on the market.
Lastly, I bought this TV because Samsung was going in the right direction with regards to making the the best picture producing TV’s on the market. This series is basically an exclusive chance to get the local LED dimming. Samsung was in the process of using the best technology to make the best TV’s, but now they are catering to the 3D crowd and putting their resources into making things come off the screen with glasses instead of worrying about picture quality. So, if you can find this model for around ,000, I would say buy it ASAP as they won’t be around much longer.
“Best Picture I Have Ever Seen” 2010-05-04
By Four 22 (NJ)
That is a statement coming from someone who until recently, was never happy with his current TV.
If your budget allows, do yourself a favor & buy this set. After months of research & debating whether or not to spend the $ , I finally made the decision to purchase & am beyond happy that I did.
When first hooking up the TV, I scanned the guide to see what CGI movies were on – came to Horton Hears A Who. In HD, this movie honestly had Blu-ray picture quality. Certain images look so perfect that they appear to be 3D. I also recently paired the TV with the Samsung HT-C6730W & watched Avatar – Flawless. Something as simple as the motion in the opening menus of Transformers 2 and James Bond Quantum of Solace (both Blu-ray) on this set compared to a 120hz LCD is definitely noticeable. To me, it was a great example of how detailed the TV really is.
CNET’s review states it best – “Samsung’s local dimming, LED-based UNB8500 series delivers the best picture quality of any LCD we’ve tested … you can remember it best as the king of LCD …”
I could not be happier with the UN46B8500 and absolutely recommend it.

“Looks great even when its off!” 2010-05-04
By DE (San Antonio, TX)
I just got this lovely thang yesterday. I have not played with it that much, but I have done enough to provide a decent review. My main concern with this purchase was that it is 60 Hz. Now that there is 120 and 240, I was not sure if getting 60 was smart. I read a review some where that pointed out that most PC monitors are 60 Hz. My 25 inch monitor is 60 Hz and the picture looks beautiful when I’m playing games or watching movies so I said wth. Last night I watched a NBA game and put on a few movies with intense action scenes… no image blur whatsoever. I love the look of this television and the fact that it is super thin. The controls on the tv itself are touch controls. There are no actual buttons to press. As far as HD goes…the picture, color, and clarity are unbelievable. The picture is so detailed that some of your favorite stars don’t look so hot once you see them in HD. I will be purchasing some sort of sound system for this tv. My PC has a Logitech 2.1 speaker system and I have become spoiled. The sound from this tv is decent but falls way short of what I like. The only real complaint I have about this tv is that the allshare feature which allows you to stream music and video from your PC requires a Samsung USB wireless link which is a little over (unless you hardwire it). I’m sure a regular wireless USB adapter could have done the trick but Samsung forces you to use theirs (which they fail to mention). I really feel that wireless should have been built into the tv in the first place but enough with that rant! Finally, I have to give it to Amazon. Their price was the best anywhere…that’s not including the fact that there was no shipping charge.
“Bought this from Frys for 1199 and is an excellent TV with little drawbacks” 2010-04-11
By P-Square (Florida)
Bought this from Frys for about hundred dollar less than what Amazon was selling.
Amazon did not price-match.
Why the 4star rating?
My old CRT TV with Convertor box picked up 25 channels over the air and yet, the brand new TV only picked up 10 channels and that was disappointing.
“Samsung UN46C5000 46-Inch 1080p 60 Hz LED HDTV”
Pros:
1. TV brings excellent picture quality for the price(1199 bones).
2. excellent sound and I don’t need a home theater system.
3. setting-up was easy.
4. was able to connect my PC via an VGA Monitor Cable with 3.5mm Audio and I can watch videos or surf the web with ease “SVGA Monitor Cable with 3.5mm Audio”
Cons:
1. Does not pick up all of the over the air digital channels.
I have yet to test the TV on a blu-ray player or the PS3 system.
I haven’t noticed any difference between 60Hz and the 120Hz on the TVs. That was weighing on my mind the most when I purchased this TV but it has not been an issue.
“marvelous!” 2010-03-29
By Ian Wright (Atlanta, GA)
I received my new tv from Amazon.com last Friday. I’ve spent a whole weekend enjoying HD glory. My movies look fabulous and my video games are crystal clear with great images and vivid colors. Revenge of the Sith, The Two Towers, Bioshock 2 and Battlefield all look spectacular. Battlefield: Bad Company becomes larger than life on this unit. While the frame rate is at 60, I didn’t find this to be a problem when playing fast paced shooters. I’m not sure that the 0 for another similar Samsung unit with a higher refresh would have been worth it.
The tv is easy to mount on the free stand that comes with the unit. The 1.25″ depth is a true wonder. The sound is excellent, but I live in an apartment in a major city.
The menus are nice, everything is easy to find and the ports in the back are a cinch to use when connecting inputs/outputs. After connecting my XBox to my Windows Media Center, I was able to view some really stunning HD movies over the network. I was truly amazed at the quality of the images. The models I’d seen in Best Buy and other stores were nice, but I’m glad I waited to get one of the new 2010 models.
I’m looking forward to getting a PS3 and using it as a Blu Ray player for movies & documentaries.
Amazon offered a great price on this and the shipping/delivery went very smoothly. Nothing but praises for Samsung and Amazon.com!
Gamers should be prepared to fork out extra money for a good HDMI cable. The cost is well worth it.

Sharp Aquos LC42D65U 42 Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review
Sharp Aquos LC42D65U 42 Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review
I bought this Pointy Aquos LC42D65U 42 Inch 1080p LCD HDTV 2 weeks before Yuletide , on a VERY strict budget. ( My wife’s cash ) I’m employed In the AV industry, ( commercial design and installation ) and I was beat, of working with stuff, that was far out of my budget. I have worked with the 52″ version before, and It actually looked great. The picture on the Pointy Aquos LC42D65U 42″ is very sharp. buy lcd hdtv
The Inputs, are absolutely adequate. Even including RS232 and USB port for firmware updates. HDMI’s out the wazoo. All the inputs are located in extraordinarily accessible places. Including the Television’s control buttons on the right side of the bezel. The “picture frame” bezel, rocks! I really hate looking at a wide, glossy, distracting bezel, that is common on flat-panals. This one, is thin with hard lines. Very professional looking. Why not have a great looking TV to match the quality of the picture on it?
Anyway, I was often anxious that most other Aquos models were 120Hz. Blu-Ray and Gaming, were the concern’s in my final call on what to buy. The standard for Blu-Ray is 1080p/24Hz. Your Totally Covered! Killer refresh rate! Great performance! Especially when used with a Aquos Blu-Ray player. Oh, yea did I bring up the mix, not only works together ( thru “Aquos Link” ), but is also one of the least expensive 1080p 5.00 Blu-Ray 0.00 combo’s. I got what I wanted, without having to “settle”. The absence of the fifth star on my review, was for the sound. Kinda stinks. Although, not so bad I would not suggest this to anybody. MOSTLY, all flat panel speakers pong. I adore this Pointy Aquos LC42D65U Television regardless. I wold endorse it to anyone.
Sharp Aquos LC42D65U 42 Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Feature
The AQUOS LC42D65U sets a new standard for large-screen flat panel Televisions . With Full HD 1080p resolution and a chic new design, it produces a breathtaking picture definition that is unique. The LC42D65U utilizes Sharp’s proprietary Advanced Super View/Black TFT Panel with Spectral Contrast Engine, providing high Dynamic Contrast Proportion , 6ms reply time and wide viewing angles (176?H x 176?V ). The LC42D65U is HDTV with built-in ATSC / QAM / NTSC tuners and include five HDMI? Inputs, compatible with 1080p signals, and 2 HD 1080p element video inputs. The LC42D65U features a sleek piano black cupboard with subtle recessed bottom-mounted speakers. The included table stand easily removes for wall mounting applications.
